About Me

english russian ukrainian translationMy name is Dmitrie Highduke. I’m a translator.

I’m really bilingual. My native languages are Russian and Ukrainian, these languages are native for many Ukrainians aged 25 and older. The reason is that many Ukrainians lived in the bilingual environment of the Soviet Union. The Russian language was used as the official language of the USSR along with the vernacular language (Ukrainian). The Ukrainian and Russian language usage differed depending on specific region; however, many Ukrainians speak both languages as native ones.

But let’s start from the very beginning. In January 1980, a boy was born named Dmitrie. The last name he inherited was Haiduk. You may guess that this boy was me. As a matter of fact, in English I spell my last name as Highduke, and in Russian and Ukrainian it is spelled as Гайдук. Let me tell you a couple of words about my last name. Some centuries ago the Slavs and Hungarians used this word to denote guerilla warriors, rebels, and other lovers of liberty. Here’s what Wikipedia tells about haiduks:

english russian ukrainian translationIn Balkan folkloric tradition, the hajduk (hajduci or haiduci in the plural) is a romanticised hero figure who steals from, and leads his fighters into battle against, the Ottoman oppressors. They are comparable to the English legend of Robin Hood and his merry men, who stole from the rich and gave to the poor, while participating in a small guerrilla war against an unjust authority.

Cultural influence

english russian ukrainian translationThe Croatian football team HNK Hajduk Split; Serbian football teams Hajduk Kula, FK Hajduk Beograd, FK Hajduk Veljko and Hajduk Lion; the Macedonian football team FK Hajduk - Vratnica; the Romanian band Taraful Haiducilor, pop-music project Haiducii, and Roma musical troupe Taraful Haiducilor are all named after the hajduci. The surnames of the fictional character George Washington Hayduke, invented by Edward Abbey, actress Stacy Haiduk, US National soccer team defender Frankie Hejduk and Milan Hejduk, an NHL hockey player are likewise derived from this word.

The term "haiduci" was used by the Romanian resistance movement Haiducii Muscelului, between 1947 and 1959, which opposed the Soviet occupation and the Communist government.

english russian ukrainian translationAs a child, I wanted to work as a teacher, interpreter and cosmonaut. This is another feature of that time – 80% of Soviet children wanted to become cosmonauts, like Yuri Gagarin. As for the profession of interpreter, in my boyhood days it attracted me, but it frightened me at the same time. I just had no idea what an interpreter should do if he doesn’t know a particular foreign word.

Undeterred, I still took a great interest in foreign (as well as native) languages and literature. In 1997 I entered Dnepropetrovsk National University, which is in the top five Ukrainian institutes and universities. My specialty was “English Language and Literature”. In 2001 I acquired a BA, and in 2002 I acquired an MA (you can find my diplomas on the Downloads page).

english russian ukrainian translationI started working in this specialty while I was still a student. At first I was translating casual texts and sometimes Baptist sermons for two dollars per hour. After graduation I got started on my translation work.

At the moment I am a freelance translator, working in the following language pairs:

English – Russian;
English – Ukrainian.

I offer such language services as translation, localization, editing, proofreading, translation evaluation, and urgent translation. I work with European, Asian and American direct customers and translation agencies. I must say without false, that during this time I’ve completed a lot of projects for various world-renowned companies.
